Founded in 1911, the University of Porto is a teaching and research institution of reference in Portugal and ranks today among the top 150 European universities in some of the most important international rankings of higher education. The University of Porto was formally incorporated on March 22, 1911, following the establishment of the Republic in Portugal. Its roots, however, date back to the eighteenth century and a combination of formative experiences in areas related to Science, Arts and Medicine, which were to be projected in the future University.It is then on a solid foundation of nearly 150 years of evolution that U.Porto opens its doors in 1911. Initially, the University appears structured in two faculties (Science and Medicine), but in the course of the twentieth century, checked a diversification of knowledge and autonomy of schools. In the first quarter of the twentieth century, they are created Technical College (renamed in 1926 Engineering School) in 1915, the Faculty of Arts in 1919 and the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1925.
