The University of Girona is a public institution that seeks excellence in teaching and research, and participate in the progress and development of society through the creation, transmission, dissemination and critique of science, technology, humanities, social sciences and the arts. The University of Girona is rooted in the country and Catalan culture and is one of the main engines of economic and cultural environment. At the same time, expresses the vocation of universality and openness to all traditions, cultures and developments. The University has its headquarters in the city of Girona and integrated into the system of public universities.
The University of Girona is heir to the so-called General Studies. It was created in 1446 by King Alfonso the Magnanimous, who granted Girona the privilege of awarding degrees in grammar, rhetoric, philosophy and theology, law and medicine. The initiative was teacher in charge of municipal trustees and the Church, but classes did not officially begin until 1572 in the area of what is now known as The Eagles building built specifically as their university. The university spread with considerable prestige until 1717. Then the university was closed due to the Nova Planta Decree and the loss of political identity of Catalonia. Throughout century XIX, as a result of the liberal revolution, the city council launched the called Free University of Girona, which offered studies in Law and Pharmacy until 1874. The recent history of the University of Girona is that of the Normal School of Teachers and, in particular, the initiatives carried out in sixties of the twentieth century in order to re-establish university studies in Girona. It creates the University College of Girona and the Polytechnic School, which depend respectively on the UAB and the UPC. Later, gets the General Study, which houses Humanities, in Business, Science and Social Sciences. Finally, in 1991, a decree of the Government created the new University of Girona, with input from various university cultures Girona in multidisciplinary studies.
