The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte originates from the University of Rio Grande do Norte, created on June 25, 1958, by state law, and federalized on December 18, 1960. The University of Rio Grande do Norte, installed in a formal ceremony held at the Alberto Maranhão Theatre on March 21, 1959, it was formed from colleges and higher-level schools existing in Natal, as the Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry; the Faculty of Law; the School of Medicine; the School of Engineering, among others.
"Since 1968, with the university reform, UFRN went through a reorganization process which marked the end of the colleges and the consolidation of the current structure, ie the grouping of several departments, depending on the nature of the courses and disciplines, organized themselves in Academic Centers.
In the 70s, construction began on the Central Campus, an area of 123 hectares. The campus now houses a bold architectural complex, surrounded by a ring that is part of the urban fabric of the city of Natal."
