The University of Pará was established by Law No. 3,191, of July 2, 1957, signed into law by President Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, after five years of legislative procedure. Brought together the seven federal, state and private colleges existing in Bethlehem: Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Engineering, Dentistry, Philosophy, Sciences and Letters and Economics, Accounting and Actuarial.
After over 18 months of its establishment, the University of Pará was solemnly installed in session chaired by President Kubitschek at the Teatro da Paz, in his January 31, 1959. Installation was a purely symbolic act, because that Decree No. 42 427 already approved on 12 October 1957, the first Statute of the University that defined the orientation of the educational policy of the institution and, since November 28 of that year, was already exercising the first rector, Mario Braga Henriques (Nov. 1957 to ten . 1960).On December 19, 1960, he took office José Rodrigues da Silveira Netto, who occupied the rectory for eight and a half years (ten. 1960 to Jul. 1969).
