The Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP) was established on August 21, 1969, with the addition of the centenary and traditional School of Pharmacy and School of Mines. Over the years, it has grown and expanded its physical space, gaining new courses, teachers and employees.
In the year 1876, the scientist Henri Gorceix founded the School of Mines, the first Brazilian institution dedicated to the teaching of mining, metallurgy and geology. Headquartered in the ancient Palace of the Governors, the Ouro Preto center, it was transferred in 1995 to the campus Mount Cruzeiro. With the community's interest in the arts, the Institute of Philosophy, Arts and Culture (Ifac) was created in 1981 in Ouro Preto, where the ranks of Performing Arts, Music and Philosophy are offered.
