The Federal University of Juiz de Fora was established in December 23, 1960, by act of President Juscelino Kubitschek. The University City was built in 1969, where it remains until the present day. Second federal university in the interior of the country to be created - second only to Santa Maria (RS) - the institution was formed from the aggregation of Juiz de Fora higher education establishments recognized and federalized.
Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Law, Pharmacy and Dentistry were the first courses. Then they were linked Geography, Literature, Philosophy, Biological Sciences, Social Sciences and History. Courses offered in the undergraduate modalities were distributed among the various units on campus. Journalism course was created and came to constitute one of the Departments of the Faculty of Law. In the 70s, with the University Reform, the UFJF now has three basic institutions: Institute of Exact Sciences (ICE), Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB) and the Institute for Human Sciences and Letters (ICHL). In 1999, a new unit was created: the Health Sciences Centre, where they spent running the Nursing, Physiotherapy and Medicine. In 2006, they created the Institute of Arts and Design (IAD) and the Faculty of Arts (Contact).
