The beginnings of private Northeastern University Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho date back to 1985, when Dr. Eduardo Gonzalez Reyes, accompanied by other visionaries, prompted its creation, an effort that was materialized by Presidential Decree No. 1,511 published in the Official Gazette No. 33,692 of April 3, 1987 which authorized its operation under the name of Northeastern University (UNOR), with the headquarters city of Barcelona, Anzoategui, Venezuela. The adoption of the name "Private Northeastern University Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho" including the acronym UGMA, culminated in 1993 with the incorporation of Civil Society Promoter University, headed by Dr. Aristides Maza Tirado,
The founder of the UGMA Rector was Dr. Eduardo Gonzalez Reyes, who gave way in 1993 to Dr. Genaro Mosquera Castellanos, playing this office until 1997 when he was appointed Dr. Milton Granados Pomenta, with long experience in the highest UGMA position ending in December 2010, when yields to the current Rector, MSc Ordaz Edgar Ortiz, who previously held the positions of Academic Vice President and Administrative Vice President. The UGMA is a relevant private educational institutional reference in contemporary Venezuela, because its community is composed approximately 17,500 students, 1,100 teachers and 400 employees and workers, figures that remain as one of the leading private universities in the country and definitely the most important from the east and the Guayana region.
