In 1889 he founded the Pedagogical Institute at the proposal of the government headed by President Jose Manuel Balmaceda, to deliver training college teachers of secondary education. In those classrooms they were formed successive generations of teachers, then integrated into the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts of the University of Chile.
In 1969 the Pedagogical Institute lost the original name and became Department of Education. Then in 1972, changing the organizational structure of the University of Chile, Faculty of Education and remained as such until 1981, in which it gave rise to the figure of professional institute called "Superior Academy of Pedagogical Sciences" was established which subsequently recover his university to become, in 1986, at the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences, UMCE condition.
