Universities in America are born because of the remoteness of the Spanish centers for higher education. America needed civil and ecclesiastical personnel to positions of responsibility. So they begin to emerge from universities and colleges studies had established religious orders. In our country can be considered the Franciscan College of San Bernardino as the history of higher education. This school, originally Jesuit, is in charge of the Order of San Francisco in 1767 when the Jesuits were expelled from America by Charles III. In 1787 a Chair of Philosophy and in 1793 installed, that of Theology.
Major University of the Republic comes into public life July 18, 1849 when it opened and solemn installation is performed in the chapel of San Ignacio in compliance with the Decree of July 14, 1849 issued by President Joaquín Suárez. However the process begins its founding sixteen years earlier, on June 11, 1833, when the proposed law by then-Senator of the Republic, the Presbyter Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga, is approved. This law provided for the creation of nine chairs. According to her, the President of the Republic should formally declare its installation when most find the chairs exercised. This raises the House of General Studies, in 1836, and had established the chairs of Latin, philosophy, mathematics, theology and jurisprudence.
