The birth of our University was the result of a long process that began in the nineteenth century, through which the Uruguayan Catholic Church claimed, continuously, the constitutional right to freedom of education at all levels, including the university level . a history more accurate and far from 1876, when Fr. Mariano Soler founded the Lyceum University Studies became Free University in 1878, with the approval of the government of the Republic. The foundation of Liceo University Studies is inserted into the great process of redefinition of the attitude of the Catholic Church against the modern world. Through his encyclicals, Pope Leo XIII sought to trace the route that the Church must continue to address the major problems of society in a Christian sense. Catholics attached great importance to the creation of educational establishments. In Uruguay, the Lyceum University Studies was proposed to train young Catholics harmonize science and faith.
