To settle in the country, the autonomous system of the Bolivian University, under the Constitution in 1930, Tarija University was founded under its current name, the June 6, 1946 by a group of Tarija professionals, with two faculties: Law , Political and Social Sciences, Arts, in its first courses; of Humanities and Education, although the latter was short-lived. Lacking own premises initially used the facilities of the San Luis National College until the Municipality, gave one of his properties to the new institution.
He earned the recognition of its legal status and the approval of its statutes by Supreme Resolution of 20 October 1946, issued by the Ministry of Education, Fine Arts and Indian Affairs. His first director appointed by the general assembly of teachers and students was Professor Federico Avila, promoter opening, he held the position until August 29 the same year, the date on which the assembly appointed Dr. Octavio O'Connor D 'Arlach as the new Rector. Then in 1947 the Faculty of Economics and Finance was established, together with law, remain to this day. The Institute of Obstetrics that subsequent transformations came to constitute the current Nursing Course was created.
