Fifty-nine people, mostly university professors of recognized academic and research career, was given the task of founding a university with a different profile to the existing, away from dogmatism, where being developed academic freedom of thought, ideological pluralism, with a strong social and humanistic conception, but especially within the democratic concept and university autonomy: Hence the name. On 24 September 1971 the Constitutive Act of the Educational Foundation INDEPENDENT OF COLOMBIA "FUAC" is signed, obtaining its legal status through Resolution No. 264 of February 4, 1972, published in the Official Journal No. 5604 15 September 1975.
Already in the eighties the institution is projected as one of the most committed to their mission. Decree Law 80 of 1980 led to the promotion of a statutory reform, approved by resolution No. 2018 of March 2, 1982, issued by the Ministry of Education and protocol with the Deed No. 787 of April 20, 1982 of the Notary 15 Circle of Santa Fe de Bogota, which provides the name change AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION OF COLOMBIA "FUAC". By Resolution No. 03279 of June 25, 1993 issued by the ICFES it is institutionally recognized as university Autonomous University of Colombia Foundation FUAC-. Considering Law 30 of 1992 by which Colombian Higher Education was amended on October 23, 1993 the General Assembly made a new statuary reform, approved by Resolution No. 019 of March 17, 1994, issued by the Ministry of education.
