The Ponta Grossa State University, located in the south central region of the state, covering 22 municipalities in its area of influence, was created by the Government of the State of Paraná, by Law 6034 of November 6, 1969, and Decree 18 111 of 28 January 1970, is one of the leading higher educational institutions of Paraná, which resulted from the merger of State Colleges existing and working alone
They were, the State College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Ponta Grossa, created by State Decree No. 8,837, of 11/08/49, and recognized by the Federal Decree No. 32,242, of 02/10/53; State College of Pharmacy and Dentistry of Ponta Grossa, created by Law No. 921 of 16/11/52, recognized by the Federal Decree No. 40,445, of 11/30/56, later spun off at the State College of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of Ponta Grossa and State College of Ponta Grossa Dentistry, through Law No. 5261 of 01/13/66; State College of Ponta Grossa law, created by Law No. 2,179, of 04/08/54, and recognized by the Federal Decree No. 50,355, of 03/18/61; and the State College of Economics and Administration Ponta Grossa, created by Law No. 03/66, of 12/01/66, and recognized by the Federal Decree No. 69,697, of 03/12/71. The legal personality of each of these isolated units was extinguished at time of creation of the University under the regime of Public Law Foundation.
