The Tokyo University of Science (TUS) celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2011. Since the time of its foundation, science and technology have undergone changes beyond any imagination. In the 21st century, global issues, such as the environment, associated with both energy resources and climate change, require progress of science and technology in harmony with nature, which is the University's founding principle.
This is even more important today. Scientists and engineers at TUS are making efforts to contribute to resolve issues of societal importance, with a strong sense of ethics as human beings, "conscience", as a basic principle. In education, the Undergraduate School asks students to create a solid basis in each discipline, which is necessary to any development in their future career, while in the Graduate School, students will be exposed to research activities that are interdisciplinary in nature. Especially in the advanced stages of their work, students will have stimulating experiences of education at the frontiers of research. In research, which should go hand in hand with education, all of the members of the University are collaborating to resolve important problems that often require scientific knowledge of not only one particular discipline but also several disciplines and are making efforts to create unique outcomes that are achievable only at TUS. TUS is proud of having had such a research organization, spanning across all educational fields, for many years.
