Thomas Rotherham College was formed as a Sixth Form College in 1967 but its origins date back to 1483 when what became Rotherham Grammar School for boys was founded by Thomas Rotherham, a local scholar who had risen to be Archibishop of York, Chancellor of England and Chancellor of Cambridge University. In 1890 the Grammar School moved to the building which now houses TRC; this had originally been built in 1876 as a training college for ministers of the Independent church.
