Tecnologico de Antioquia started academic activities in 1983, as a public institution of higher education dedicated mainly to the technical and technological training. Today's University Institution had its origins in the Women's Educational Center of Antioquia -CEFA- which, in 1979, was authorized offering higher education programs in the technological mode. During that year the campus and administrative structure was shared with the intermediate vocational education programs.
In 1979, by Decree 00262, issued by the Government of Antioquia, it became a public decentralized property of the departmental level. In turn, Ordinance 48 of 1979 determined that the Institute's academic development should take place on two levels: intermediate vocational education and higher education as technological training. Agreement 181 of December 1982, issued by ICFES (Colombian's Higher Education Financing Institution) granted the operational license to the programs Special Education Technology, Early Childhood Education and Basic Education.
