The idea to have a college in South Sumatra has been around since the early 1950s, which triggered a reception occasion of Independence Day celebrations on August 17, 1952. Initiated by some community leaders, transformed into an agreement to form a "Committee Fakultet South Sumatra" , Towards the end of August 1952, a number of considerations, it was determined that the first to be established is the faculty of economics. For that formed "Committee for Economic Fakultet South Sumatra" managed by a foundation established on April 1, 1953 with the name "Higher Education Foundation Syakhyakirti".Opening of Economic Fakultet officially under the Higher Education Foundation Syakhyakirti was conducted on October 31, 1953 in a ceremony attended by Mr. Hadi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture (PPK), Drg. Isa M. (Governor of South Sumatra), Bambang Utoyo (Commander TT II Sriwijaya) and Ali Gathmyr (Chairman of the Parliament of South Sumatra).
