IAIN North Sumatra establishment in 1973 is a natural development of the progress of education in North Sumatra, From a historical perspective, the existence of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra backed by two factors. First, that the Islamic university status was as yet no country in the province of North Sumatra. Second, the growth of madrasas, schools, and educational institutions equivalent to high school is growing rapidly in this area, which in turn requires the existence of institutions of higher education. Since the beginning of independence until 1970, the number of alumni of madrasa education and boarding schools who wish to continue their studies to higher education is increasing. Therefore, the presence of State Islamic Institute (IAIN) in North Sumatra was even more urgent and very important. It was even more so considering that in various other cities in Indonesia have been first established a number of IAIN. Because of the support for the establishment of North Sumatera IAIN come from various segments of society of North Sumatra, ranging from local governments, universities, scholars, and public figures.
