The Innsbruck Medical University is a young research institution with a long tradition. A high school was built by the Jesuits in Innsbruck early as 1562nd In this building Emperor Leopold I founded on October 15, 1669 a university (hence the name "Leopold-Franzens-Universität"). To ensure the financing was a special tax on the Haller salt - the "Haller salt surcharge" - will be charged. The Innsbruck Medical University was one of the four founding faculties (philosophy in 1669, Faculty of Law 1670, Faculty of Theology in 1670, Faculty of Medicine 1674) of the University of Innsbruck. In its nearly 340-year history it has always been one of the main figureheads of the University.
