IFS was founded as the Institute of High-Speed Mechanics at Tohoku Imperial University in 1943, and it was reorganized as the Institute of Fluid Science in 1998. Today, after organizational changes in 1998 and 2013, IFS is a world-class advanced fluid research center with 27 research laboratories under three research divisions and one research center: Creative Flow
"The Advanced Flow Experimental Research Center of IFS promotes research using world-class experimental equipment such as a low-turbulence wind tunnel and shock wave research facilities. The Institute also includes the Advanced Fluid Information Research Center that carries out cutting-edge research such as large-scale flow simulations and measurement-integrated simulations by using supercomputers.
IFS has introduced a system of research clusters. Every researcher at IFS is free to join five research clusters: Aerospace, Energy, Life Science, Nano-Micro, and Integration Research Clusters. The goal of this system is to enhance researchers' interactions, focusing on research areas of importance to society. As a world-class research center of the fluid science community, we have hosted an international symposium every year since 2001 and we have been promoting international collaborative research projects as a Joint Usage/Research Center in the field of fluid science since 2010."
