The college was started with founder Principal "Smt. Maltibai Shrikhande", in the year 1963 with a strength of only 10 students. This institution was smoothly run by a society of reputed personalities under the chairmanship of Shri Dalchandji Jain, a well known social worker and recognized industrialist of the city. Later on in the year 1965, the college was handed over to the Sagar Municipality and was permitted to run in the building named as "Town Hall". In the year 1978, the college was taken over by the State Government in the regime of Shri Laxmi Narayan Yadav, then Minister of Higher Education M.P. Bhopal. Besides Arts, Science, Home Science and Commerce faculties were also started in the best interest of the girls alongwith Post graduate courses in the year 1982. At present in the year 2001 the total 2621 students were enrolled in different disciplines at U.G. & P.G. levels, P. G. courses are run in ten different disciplines. there are 52 teachers in the college out of which 90% are P.h.D holders.
