The Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) was created by State Law 1,366 of December 2, 1955, and installed in the Paraíba University name as a result of joining some colleges.
In early 2002, the UFPB passed the break-up of four of its seven campuses. The Law no. 10,419 of April 9, 2002 has created, by dismemberment of UFPB, the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), headquartered in Campina Grande. Since then, the UFPB was made legally by the campuses João Pessoa (capital), Sand and Banana, passing other campuses (Campina Grande, Cajazeiras, Patos and Sousa) to be incorporated by UFCG.
