The Nursing School St. Joseph of Cluny was founded in 1940 by Mother Pedro Tavares, Nurse Hospital Pasteur of Paris, at the request of a group of Madeira, with good intellectual training, moral and social. Initially, the course had a duration of one year.
On 13 October 1948 the ESESJC is recognized by Order of the State Social Welfare Secretary. It was legalized under artº3 the Regulation of Nursing Schools, approved by Decree Law No. 38885 of August 28, 1952. This institution was endowed with pedagogical and technical autonomy, since its inception, and its direction and teaching of responsibility of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, in collaboration with nurses and other health technicians.
