Electric Power University was first founded as Hanoi School of Practical Industry in 1898 by French people. After the reunification of the country in 1954, the school was divided into two smaller schools named School of Engineering No.1 and School of Engineering No.2. In June 1962, the School of Engineering No.1 was renamed School of Electrical Mechanics.
In February 1966, the Ministry of Industry (now Ministry of Industry and Trade) decided to split the school into two schools: School of Electricity (later called School of Electricity No.1) and School of Mechanics. Later on, in April 2000, due to structural rearrangement of Vietnam Electricity, School of In-Service Training and School of Electricity No.1 were merged and renamed School of Electrical Engineering No.1 by the Ministry of Industry. In October 2001, the Ministry of Education and Training decided to upgrade the school to Electric Power College. After five years, on 19 May 2006, the Prime Minister issued a decision to establish the nowaday Electric Power University.
