The art of deciding.

“Instead of thinking what you want to do, think about who you actually want to become. Think about how your identity will change as you make any decision in your life.”

Effective decision-making skills are very important for a student’s learning in many areas. When students are supported to make responsible decisions, it helps them to manage their own behaviour and relate it more effectively to others.

Providing students with some choice over what and how they learn can enhance motivation as well as responsibility. Sometimes asking others about your decision making can help you to evaluate your actions and find a better way to handle situations.

Good and effective decision making helps to support you to develop independence and confidence in your own judgment. The kinds of decisions one makes, affects their mental health and well-being, their relationships and their success.

One should learn to make good decisions to help them become more independent and responsible.

Students learn good decision-making skills gradually and are strongly influenced by the expectations and values they learn from those around them.

A good decision making only occurs through observing others (particularly, your parents), discussing values and hearing others’ opinion, and also having opportunities to make decisions and experiencing the consequences as well.

The 3 key skills you need to develop for decision making are:-

·         Thinking of possible options

·         Identifying when a decision actually needs to be made

·         Evaluating the options and choosing strategies for making the decisions and reviewing how it works

Considering the situation carefully and weighing the options before coming to a decision helps you in making better decisions.

It is very important that the goals you set are achievable and motivate you towards it. Indeed, steps needed to reach your goal should be clear and small enough to manage.

Pushing paper across tables and going through the motions of decision making without any practical application is no one’s idea of a good time or good learning. The purpose and practice of engaging students as decision-makers throughout education is made obvious through meaningful involvement.

A meaningful decision-making many-a-times involves students in personal decision making. These types of decisions are the ones which are made personally by an individual and usually affect themselves. Meaningful student involvement acknowledges that personal decision making is sometimes necessary.

Sometimes systematic decision making is also necessary for an individual. One should also involve themselves in systematic decision making several times to make your decisions worth and meaningful.

Decision making is not a skill that can be acquired fortnight but a life-long journey of wins, losses and lessons.
