5 college myths busted.

  • Sleep, studies, social life – choose one: Many people advise students saying that entering college brings a lot of burden on the students and they have to juggle everything. Students have to either sacrifice their social life or sleep to get good grades. But it doesn’t have to be this way, this is a false assumption. You can have all the three by being healthy and composed. This myth comes from the two most common problems students have- over scheduling, poor planning, or sometimes- no planning. If you leave all work to the last minute, you will surely suffer; suppose- if you forget that you have an exam the next day, then you have to prepare for it the whole night. You can easily avoid it by making weekly plans and doing your assignments and creating your schedule accordingly.

  • Freshmen don’t get A’s: Most of the new college students think that as they are entering college- everything has changed. They have to work harder and study more than they did in school. They think that they will not be able to score well. If you will study more, it is obvious that you will score good marks. Thinking that you won’t be able to get good marks in college is a myth.  Plan to get good grades and work hard to achieve them. Once you do, you will get to know that you are capable and you can score well throughout college. If you don’t, you will be digging out of a hole and it will be more difficult for you at the higher levels.

  • Study habits of your high school will work: Maybe you think that your high school studying techniques can work in college as well. Spending 8-9 hours per day in school and studying an extra 2 hours daily was enough for you to qualify for the next class, but you will spend 3-4 hours per day in college and will need to study much more than you did in school. Success will require a different approach. Try to find a better environment to focus and retain information in college. You need to work hard in order to achieve your goals because college is the only stage which will either take you to the path of success or it will drop you down.

  • You should go to the most prestigious college: However, most of the people judge and say that you should go to the college that fits you the best and it should be prestigious. But it has to do with how you feel when you are on campus, that matches with how you learn and how your professors teach and the academic pressure you can handle. If the college isn’t suitable for you and does not match your requirement, then it is useless to get into regardless of its prestige. Many of the students think that prestigious colleges offer greater options for undecided students and can help them. However choices alone should not be the deciding factor, if you have not decided what you want to opt for then the best college is one that has core requirements that ensure you to explore new areas and fields.

  • Colleges are concerned only with academics: Many of the colleges and universities not only focus on academics, but they even pride themselves on their ability to develop the person fully. The holistic development of a student is the main motive in today’s world. Some of the personal development comes from requiring a broad-based general education that contributes to your understanding of the world and society. Colleges tend to organize workshops for the students on time management, relationship development, handling yourself and your responsibilities as a citizen.
