Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1623, it is a Catholic university, recognized by the Colombian government, which aims to serve the human community, especially Colombia, trying to establish a more civilized, more educated and more just society, inspired by Gospel values. It promotes the integral development of people, human values, development and transfer of science and culture, and contribute to the development, guidance, constructive criticism and transformation of society
The June 13, 1623, the Audiencia and the archbishop acknowledged the papal brief and the Royal Decree authorizing the academic degrees in school that the Society of Jesus was established in Santa Fe since 1604. Then, the students had time back there studied, including Pedro Claver, received his degree. It must be remembered that students seminary of St. Bartholomew school, founded by Archbishop Wolf Guerrero in 1605 and entrusted to the Jesuits since, also studied at the Jesuit school. This date marks, since the source of which was known in colonial times as university and academy of San Francisco Javier, suspended in 1767 and revived in 1930 under the name of Javeriana University.
