The Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI) is an independent federal authority within the portfolio of Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BmEL). It is divided into eleven specialized institutes at five locations.
"The focus of the work of the FLI are the health and welfare of farm animals and the protection of humans from zoonoses, ie between animal and human transmissible infections. These objects are defined in the Animal Health Law.
The FLI is working in different disciplines both basic and practical.
Objectives of the work are:
1. the protection against infectious diseases, animal diseases and zoonoses by
better and faster diagnosis,
the development of measures for prevention,
the creation of foundations for modern control strategies.
2. improving the well-being of farm animals and the production of high quality food of animal origin by
developing welfare-friendly farming systems,
the preservation of genetic diversity of farm animals,
the efficient use of feed.
As a federal research institute and independent higher federal authority of BmEL FLI developed under the policy advice reports and opinions. "
